From April 27-29 2022, the “BeWISE conference - WOMEN IN SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING” was held at the INNSIDE Melia Hotel in Dresden, organized by the equal opportunities department of the TU Dresden. 40 female scientists from seven DFG-coordinated programs of TU Dresden attended the three-day event, among them four participants from the Cluster of Excellence Physics of Life (PoL). The event aimed to foster women in their scientific careers.

The three-day BeWISE conference offered numerous workshops, individual coaching and network opportunities for early career female scientists. During fireplace talks the participants had the chance to talk with experienced female professors, acting as role models, and learn more about their career paths in science and how they overcame obstacles along the way. The conference addressed young female scientists and junior research group leaders at TU Dresden. Our researchers at PoL were very happy that this workshop could take place again after a two-year break and look forward to future events.

Participating DFG-coordinated programs of TU Dresden were:

  • PoL - Cluster of Excellence Physics of Life
  • ct.qmat - Cluster of Excellence Complexity and Topology in Quantum Matter
  • CeTI - Cluster of Excellence Centre for Tactile Internet with Human-in-the-Loop
  • SFB 1143 - Correlated Magnetism: From Frustration to Topology
  • GRK 2430 - Interactive Fiber Rubber Composites
  • SFB 1415 - Chemistry of Synthetic Two-Dimensional Materials
  • SFB/TRR 205 - Adrenal Research CRC/TRR 205

Providing equal opportunities is a core task of every university. The TU Dresden is committed to the objective of a gender equal university and has firmly anchored this aim in the mission statement and university institution. TU Dresden takes the view that gender equality is closely connected to the concept of a family-friendly university, moving away from a traditional division of responsibilities between women and men by establishing a work-life-balance for both, which makes it possible to reconcile working life with family plans. In recent years, TU Dresden has stepped up measures to meet the goal of a gender equal and family-friendly university.

TU Dresden offers diverse career development programs for female scientists in the qualification phase, which help them to find answers to their own questions and thus their personal path to science. Please find more information on the website of the equal opportunities department of the TU Dresden.
