The Physics of Life Exhibition at COSMO Wissenschaftsforum!

With over 800 visitors, the Physics of Life exhibition at COSMO Wissenschaftsforum offered plenty of new things to discover!

In recent years, scientific research is gaining visibility and causing impact at a rate greater than ever before. As a result, many members of the public are curious to glimpse into the world of scientists and see the scientific process. One opportunity to share the work of researchers with a non-scientific audience is through exhibitions to inspire and foster curiosity in visitors. For this reason, in March 2025 the Cluster of Excellence Physics of Life (PoL) unveiled an exciting hands-on exhibition delving into the fundamental questions of life. This interactive exhibition, titled “What is Life?”, took place at the COSMO Wissenschaftsforum, and invited curious visitors to explore biology and life from a different perspective. Interactive experiments, science comics, and videos demonstrated how the interplay of molecules, cells, and tissues shape an organism.

Previously at Technische Sammlungen Dresden until October 27th 2024, the exhibition was developed for a new space. From March 18th until May 8th, the COSMO exhibition space was opened from 1-6 pm every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The exhibition was free and attracted visitors of all ages and backgrounds. Thanks to numerous volunteers from the PoL community, including PhD students, postdoctoral scientists, and SHK/WHK staff, there was a PoL member present every day of the exhibition to engage with the public and answer questions. In total, over 800 visitors came to COSMO to learn about PoL research and explore the fundamental questions of biological physics. In addition, events were held in the COSMO space. For example ‘SYNTHesizing Life’, a talk by group leader Jesse Veenvliet at the Max Planck Institute for Cell Biology and Genetics (MPI-CBG) attracted numerous visitors, which was followed by live music.

The exhibition was organised by PoL researchers Marcus Jahnel and Professor Benjamin Friedrich. Illustrations on the exhibition panels were designed by artist Priyanka Oberoi. Additionally, the PoL comics were developed by graphic artist John Chad in collaboration with the PoL Public Relations and Outreach Committee.

Thank you to all our volunteers, visitors, and PoL staff for their support with the exhibition!
