Just like bird flocks and snowflakes, embryogenesis is an extraordinary example of self-organisation. In our lab, we explore this mysterious ability of cells to organise themselves and sculpt something as complex as an embryo. Because all this happens in the womb, we can’t see how this happens. On top, studying human embryos is not even allowed! We therefore developed methods to turn tiny clumps of stem cells into miniature versions of part of the embryo. These mini-models mark the beginning of a new era in developmental biology and reproductive medicine. I will tell you how these models shed light on the fundamentals of life, followed by a musical journey from the 80s to now!
