Notice: Due to ongoing restrictions on travel and large gatherings, this meeting will take place in an online format. Please note the changes in the programme and registration.
About the workshop:
Seventy years ago, Erwin Schrödinger asked the question ’What is Life?’ in his well-known book. However, until today, physical insight into the mechanics and statistics of living matter, from molecules to cells to tissues, remains far behind our understanding of how collections of dead particles are organized. The central aim of our EMBO Workshop is to discuss recent advances in the field of biological physics and identify emergent principles that govern the dynamic organization of living matter. We will use this conference as a platform to discuss living matter as a self-organizing and active form of soft condensed matter. This approach will, as we believe, reveal original and new physics and establish a new perspective on dynamic biological processes as self-organizing dynamical systems. The goal this EMBO Workshop is the emergence of a new understanding of living systems as physical systems where spatiotemporal structure emerges robustly through energy and matter flows. We intend to identify physical principles of organization across scales – from molecules to cells to tissues. We have selected a synergistic group of speakers from physics, biology, and computer science to embrace the interdisciplinarity of our scope. Our sessions will be dedicated to the following topics: Active forces in Biological Systems, Self organization of Living Systems, Compartmentalization of the Cytoplasm, Nuclear Organization, Tissue Mechanics, and Tissue Morphogenesis.
Registration Deadline: 15 May 2021
Abstract Submission Deadline: 15 May 2021
Chosen Participants Will Be Notified By: 30 May 2021
Payment Deadline: 07 June 2021
- Access to recorded sessions and all live events
- Online abstract book
Payment instructions will be sent to successful applicants upon acceptance to the workshop. All payments must be made by bank transfer.
The organisers will check the scientific topic of the research and scientific excellence based on the abstract. We will accept up to 200 conference attendees.
Abstracts should contain information on the topic that will be discussed at the meeting. Abstracts should be no longer than 250 words.
The Scientific Committee will make the selection of abstracts for oral presentations by May 15, 2021. The presenting author will receive an email with the result of the review and the Scientific Committee’s decision on the abstract. Depending on the selection of presentation format by the committee, further instructions on how to upload posters and audio clips to the Virtual Congress Platform will be provided. If a selected author cannot upload or present, the presenting author should assign a replacement presenter to present the abstract.
(Virtual) Poster: abstracts for presentation in a virtual poster format. A 5-minute audio clip and a PDF poster should be uploaded to the Virtual Congress Platform.
Registration fee waivers
A limited number of registration fee waivers are available for participants. Applicants do not need to apply separately for fee waivers for this event but should indicate on the registration form if they wish to be considered for a fee waiver. Selection of awardees is handled directly by the organizer, who will notify all eligible participants.
The EMBO registration fee waivers are allocated by the organisers on the basis of the quality of the abstract submitted, with priority given to participants of any nationality working in laboratories in: Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Malta, Lithuania, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Turkey, as well as from EMBC Associate Member States Chile, India, Singapore and Taiwan.
All applicants have to justify the reasons for applying for a fee waiver. Organisers may consider to award fee waivers to applicants from lower income economies.
Assistance for the hearing impaired will be provided on request. Please contact Ilona Kreher directly.
The EMBO Workshop Physics of living systems: From molecules to tissues will be held as a virtual workshop.
The time zone will be Central European Time (CET).
Please note that recordings will be taken from this conference and they will be available to all paying participants, at the discretion of each speaker.
